Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I look forward to working with you on our combined goal of excellence in language arts based on a curriculum using multiple learning modalities that strives to reach all learners.

ABSENCE
Because of the high rigor, every effort should be made to attend class each day. However, should an absence be necessary, makeup work is accepted for all absences pursuant to the Washoe County School District Policy. Students are responsible for checking with the instructor and making arrangements during non-class time to obtain makeup work.
LATE WORK
Late work without an acceptable pass will score a maximum of 70% depending on the accuracy of the work. No work will be accepted for grade two weeks past the due date.
SCHOOL/CLASS PROCEDURES
The following procedures will be taught during the first week of school and practiced during the school year to assure the best learning environment for the benefit/safety of the student:
Show up to class every day unless you are ill or have a valid reason for the absence.
Remain in assigned seat/seating space unless directed by the instructor.
Adhere to the “STAR” directive. (Sit up, track the speaker/model, ask and answer questions like a scholar and show respect to everyone).
Raise hand to speak at appropriate times and respectfully wait your turn.
Have all supplies and papers every day.
Move around the building/classrooms/computer labs quietly and respectfully.
Pick up after yourself. Keep our campus clean!
Follow procedures for passing papers in and collecting items to pass out.
Be to class on time.
Remain quiet when the class phone rings or the intercom sounds.
Respect all items belonging to the teacher.
Turn in all work as requested by the teacher.
Follow instructor’s directions during fire drills, code yellows and code reds.
OSA is a no-gum campus.
Wear approved uniforms every day.
Cell phone use is prohibited on campus at OSA.
Be “On Your Mark” with a desk clear of unnecessary items during class time.
Speak with an academic tone of voice and use only academic words.
Wear school ID and carry student planner to class every day.
PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE PLAN
O’Brien Stem Academy has a progressive discipline plan in place should a student choose not to follow school or class procedures.
1. Required warning.
2. Opportunity to reteach procedure expectation (Hallway conference with teacher).
3. Appropriate classroom intervention with parent contact.
4. Removal to segregated work area under supervision of administration.

- Term One: Several essays (narrative and informational) with numerous revisions to incorporate expressive and reflective and "show, not tell" elements plus standard English conventions.
- Term Two: Students will showcase their new-found writing skills by producing a school news magazine. In addition to writing, there will be opportunities to explore photography, page layout and political cartooning.
- Teacher has a positive and respectful attitude each day and is prepared to facilitate learning.
